In vitro fertilization (IVF): Moving towards the dream of motherhood at Clínica Medrano

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology that has brought hope and success to many couples and individuals wishing to conceive. At Clínica Medrano, we are committed to providing advanced and personalized options to help you on your journey to parenthood.

On this page, we will explore IVF in detail and how it may be a suitable option for you.

What is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology procedure in which eggs and sperm are combined in a laboratory to achieve fertilization outside the body. Once fertilized, the highest-quality embryo is selected for transfer to the uterus with the goal of achieving pregnancy. Any remaining good-quality embryos are frozen for future attempts.

Who can benefit from In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) has several indications, including:

• Tubal obstruction
• Recurrent miscarriage
• Male factor infertility
• Endometriosis
• Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
• Advanced maternal age
• Unexplained infertility
• Failure of previous artificial inseminations
• Ovarian failure
• Decreased ovarian reserve
• Single motherhood
• Transgender patients

Success Rates and Considerations for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

IVF success rates can vary depending on age, egg quality, and sperm quality. They generally range from 30% to 60% per embryo transferred.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Process

At Clínica Medrano, we are committed to providing a safe and effective in vitro fertilization (IVF) process supported by specialized medical professionals. The general steps of the process are outlined below:

  1. Controlled ovarian stimulation: Specific medications are used to stimulate the production of oocytes in the woman’s ovaries. During this process, ultrasound scans and hormone tests are performed to monitor the development of the ovarian follicles.
  2. Egg retrieval: When the follicles reach maturity, they are retrieved through a brief surgical procedure known as follicular aspiration. This procedure is performed under sedation.
  3. Semen collection: A few hours later, a semen sample is collected from the man for preparation and analysis in the laboratory.
  4. Fertilization: The eggs and sperm are combined in a culture dish, allowing the sperm to fertilize the eggs naturally. The resulting embryos are cultured for a few days before the most viable ones are selected for transfer.
  5. Embryo Transfer: From the embryos obtained, the highest quality one is selected for transfer to the woman’s uterus through a simple and painless procedure. Implantation and the development of the pregnancy are then awaited. Any remaining good-quality embryos are frozen.
  6. Follow-up and Pregnancy Test: After the embryo transfer, you will be given instructions and follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress. Approximately 12 days later, a blood test will be performed to confirm pregnancy.
