What is Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)?
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI, is an assisted reproductive technology primarily used in cases of male infertility or when other assisted reproductive techniques have been unsuccessful. During this procedure, a single sperm is carefully selected and injected directly into each of the woman’s eggs in the laboratory. ICSI significantly increases the chances of fertilization and the formation of viable embryos, thus increasing the likelihood of achieving pregnancy.
Who can benefit from Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)?
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) may be a suitable option in the following cases:
- Severe male factor infertility: when there are problems with sperm count, motility, or morphology. Even in cases of azoospermia or vasectomy, where there are no sperm in the ejaculate, it is possible to obtain sperm directly from the testicle for use in the procedure.

Sperm Microinjection Procedure at Clínica Medrano
- Controlled ovarian stimulation: Specific medications are used to stimulate the production of oocytes in the woman’s ovaries. During this process, ultrasound scans and hormone tests are performed to monitor the development of the ovarian follicles.
- Egg retrieval: When the follicles reach maturity, they are retrieved through a brief surgical procedure known as follicular aspiration. This procedure is performed under sedation.
- Semen collection: A few hours later, a semen sample is collected from the man for preparation and selection in the laboratory.
- Sperm microinjection: Using a high-precision microscope, a high-quality sperm is selected and carefully injected into each of the retrieved eggs.
- Embryo culture and transfer: Once the eggs have been fertilized, the resulting embryos are cultured in the laboratory for 5 days before the highest quality blastocyst is selected for transfer to the uterus. Any remaining good-quality embryos will be frozen.
- Follow-up and pregnancy test: After the embryo transfer, you will be given instructions and follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress. Approximately 12 days later, a blood test will be performed to confirm pregnancy.
